to be appointed by John Holland McConnell Dowell Joint Venture to design, supply, deliver, install, test and commission 1 unit of 60/20 ton Double Girder Gantry Crane and 1 unit of 80/20 ton Double Girder Gantry Crane. To increase efficiency and reduce the cost of loading and civil works, Jenmon recommended for the 1 unit of 80/20 ton Double Girder Gantry Crane to be installed on wheels.

JRL J106 China Communications Construction Company Limited (Singapore Branch)

China Communications Construction Company Limited (Singapore Branch) – Land Transport Authority (LTA) East West Line (EWL) and Jurong Region Line (JRL) J106 Project

In February 2020, LTA awarded a contract for the design and construction of Boon Lay station to China Communications Construction Company Limited (Singapore Branch). This includes the design and construction of Boon Lay Station and a viaduct stretching 800m along Jurong West Street 64, as well as addition and alteration works to the existing East West Line Boon Lay Station to connect it to the new Jurong Region Line Boon Lay Station, which will be served as an interchange.

Past Projects 2021, Past Projects 2021

The construction of this station cum interchange will be China Communications Construction Company Limited (Singapore Branch)’s first railway contract in Singapore. Jenmon was thus privileged to be awarded by China Communications Construction Company Limited (Singapore Branch) to design, supply, deliver, install, test and commission 2 units of 10 ton Single Girder Gantry Cranes and 1 unit of 80+80ton Double Girder Rubber Tyred Gantry Crane.

During the course of the discussion with China Communications Construction Company Limited, the limited space at the precast yard was raised. As the flexibility from moving from one bay to another was a challenge for a 160 ton finished viaduct beam, Jenmon proposed solution was to use a Double Girder Rubber Tyred Gantry Crane. In comparison to a normal Double Girder Gantry Crane, the Double Girder Rubber Tyred Gantry Crane will be much narrower in span, increasing the productivity and lowering the cost. Jenmon hopes this the installation of this Double Girder Rubber Tyred Gantry Crane will enable China Communications Construction Company Limited to complete the construction of the station cum interchange with ease.

Scheduled to be completed in 2026, this J106 project forms part of the new Jurong Region Line MRT development by LTA, Singapore’s seventh MRT line and the first fully elevated line, without any underground stations. When fully completed in 2028, this line is expected to have a total of 24 stations and 3 interchanges, providing greater accessibility and convenience for passengers.

Challenging the Sea

Challenge – Complete pipe laying system

One of the leading global contractors specialises in seabed-to-surface engineering, construction and services to the offshore energy industry worldwide. To match the evolving needs of deep-water subsea developments, Subsea 7 promises to set a new benchmark in the subsea world with the state-of-art strategic enabler – Seven Borealis, DP pipe lay and Heavy Lift Construction Vessel.

One major feature of the 182.2m long Swiss Army knife is the deep-water S-lay capability. Flexibility and productivity was key.

From the port, single joint pipe sections were fed into the firing line running along the length of the vessel to be welded into a continuous pipeline. After the firing line, the pipeline passed over the vessels stinger at the stem and was lowered to the seabed in an S-shaped curve.

A crane system was required in the length of the S-lay system to ensure flexibility in the operations. Other than pipe transfer, part of the operations needed a lifting system to configure the firing line with eleven stations to make up single joints of pipe, or six double joint stations, offering broad flexibility in the types of pipelines the vessel could install.

The challenges to be solved were the very limited space onboard, the environmental factors and the ever-inconsistent seas. Here is where our partner recommended Jenmon to assist our client.

Solution – Offshore customization

Complex applications required special expertise and solutions. Jenmon was chosen as the provider of Seven Borealis’s 18 units of 10 ton wire rope hoists and 15 ton chain hoists, comprising of under slung cranes and monorail cranes. Jenmn was able to work with the upper management to design cranes that fit their needs.

When designing cranes in ships, it all boils down to the effectiveness of utilising the confined space. With state-of-the-art, high quality products, Jenmon provided special designs with low headroom and an optimised hook approach.

Mounted directly on the ceiling, the underslung cranes and monorail cranes allow efficient material handling even in the tight spaces of the ship. With the energy chain power supply system replacing the traditional festoon systems, work space under the cranes are further increased. This translates into more effective usage of workspace height.

Furthermore, offshore customisation was integrated into the equipment to lengthen the maximum life span and maintain efficiency in the seas.

Meticulous in every gap
Sagging and hogging were common in ships. In order to counter these issues, runways were installed with 50mm apart from each other. Larger wheels of the crane trolley were machined as well. A high demand in precision and quality control were necessary.

Travelling Steadily
Maintaining a steady movement is vital as well. Having to operate this lifting equipment in the middle of the ocean, customised Rack and Pinion drive system was incorporated into the crane track to suit sea-worthiness.

Preventing Corrosion
Taking into consideration the environment, the crane structures were treated in accordance to the specifications in offshore coating systems. Prior to painting, blasting had to be done by using shots to remove all contaminants effectively. For final protection against corrosion, special marine paint was used to provide long-lasting coating. Similarly, the hoist and its components were surface treated and painted with maritime paint.

Working Away from Home

Challenge – Away Home Disadvantage

BAM International is a subsidiary of Royal BAM Group, one of Europe’s largest contracting companies with extensive international experience. Their cantilever bridge was undergoing modification in Batam, Indonesia, in preparation for the largest oil and gas project in Darwin, Australia’s Northern Territory. Part of the innovation included gantry cranes, which were capable of transporting large concrete beams across the self-propelled CLB.

, Special Projects – Working away from Home

Jenmon was proud to be awarded for 2 units of 70 ton Double Girder Gantry Cranes. The whole project comprised of crane design in accordance is Australia Standards, fabrication control, arrangement of shipment, pre-assembling, testing and commissioning at their Batam yard. It also included calibration at Darwin for final commissioning.

Most of the operations were to be carried out away from the convenience of our home ground, Singapore. As such, necessary considerations and preparations were required to ensure smooth operations at the Batam yard.

Solution – Preparedness and Quality Assurance

Despite the challenges, it proved no difficult task to Jenmon. With years of experience in overseas project, Jenmon understands all successful projects derive from Total Preparations and Strict Quality Control.

Before leaving to Batam, quality control systems were in place throughout the preparation stage, as well as strict monitoring of welding quality, finishing works and dimensional control. The Logistic team, while keeping track of the crane parts, organised the shipment schedule to meet on-time delivery. All in all – To make sure our customer is satisfied with our products and services.

Purpose-built for this project, the 70 ton Gantry Cranes have a number of unique features:

1. Synchronisation made lifting simpler
Both cranes were meant to operate at the same time to carry the long and heavy bridge materials to the other side of the CLB. Operated by one operator, they will move and stop at the same time in the same direction. With this, load alignment was maintained throughout the transportation. Benefits: Making lifting simpler, safer and swift.

2. Anti-Collision Sensor Enhancing Safety
Anti-collision sensor proves to be an essential safety device, especially when machinery is working in close proximity with on-board personnel. Installed on the same CLB’s tracks, our gantry cranes share the same platform with a crawler crane. Upon sensing any obstruction, the sensor stops the cranes in a safe distance, preventing any accidents – an added benefit with improves productivity and efficiency by enhancing safety.

3. Ease of Relocation
The double girder cranes had to be dismantled and transported out of Batam. “Easy to Install, Easy to Dismantle” were required to ensure that the double girder cranes were able to installed in the new location. The final product – Compact yet strong, being our motto – enables these cranes to be lifted and handled with ease.

Facilitate Ramp Construction

Tuas West Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Extension Depot

Challenge – Balancing Act

LTA awarded the construction of Tuas West MRT Extension Depot to Jurong Primewide Pte Ltd. This involved the construction of a 26-hectare depot, which will be an extension of the East-West Line from Joo Koon station.

Jurong Primewide had extensive experience in building and civil engineering works, having worked on several projects in Singapore and internationally.

Jenmon was then awarded by Jurong Primewide Pte Ltd to design, supply, deliver, install, test and commission 1 unit of 40 ton Double Girder Gantry Crane.

Along with the depot, an area was designated for a bus terminal, which took up approximately 10,000 sq metres. It was to be primarily accessible via a ramp structure, connecting directly to Tuas West Drive. Alternatively, the site could also be accessible via another ramp structure connecting to Tuas Link 4. Both ramps, with heights similar to a 7-storey HDB building, was to be constructed solely by a gantry crane. The construction involved putting together precast concretes to build the sloped platform for to the bus terminal.

However, there was a slight challenge. Each precast concrete, weighing 27 ton and measuring 2.5m by 17m, required an extraordinary method to maintain its balance while tilting the precast platform at the right angle. The limited space also rendered the Mobile Crane and Tower Crane impossible to perform the alignment with just one lifting point.

Then again, despite everything, this was no difficult task for Jenmon.

Solution – Bold Solution in Construction

Ramp Construction, Special Projects – Facilitate Ramp Construction

Stability was key in ensuring safety during the installation process. It took more than 1 lifting point to maintain the balance of the precast platform, as well as to tilt the 27 tons of concrete. We addressed the concerns with our design: 20 + 20 tons Double Girder Gantry Crane with Cantilever Crab Unit.

The Gantry Crane, spanned 20m with height of lift of 21m, was able to accommodate the entire ramp up to its highest point. This design consisted of 3 main features in order to meet the requirement:

Versatile Alignment

Two hoists, fitted on both sides of the cantilever crab unit, provided extended versatility while aligning the angle of the precast platform. Using a spreader beam under the hook helped to further enhance stability.

Portable Power for Reach

Having a generator set installed, the Gantry Crane was equipped with portable power to travel along the 190m installation area. This resolved the issue of the crane being unable to reach places where power was unavailable. Therefore, cost was significantly saved without additional electrical power system.

Ease of Relocation

“Easy to Install, Easy to Dismantle” is one of the main features of Jenmon’s cranes. Taking this into account, relocation of the Gantry Crane to the second ramp site was less of a hassle. Final outcome: Expedited construction.

Results – The Right Partnership

Honoured to be part of our client’s first project with LTA, Jenmon showcased our best effort when achieving our customer’s requirements. This cost-effective lifting solution resolved the space constraint issue, thus resulting in higher productivity and safety.

Since most of the Gantry Crane’s constituent parts were suspended above the ground, it did not take up much ground space. Furthermore, with the cantilever crab unit to lift both ends of the platform, the issue of possible boom collision when using the mobile or tower crane was resolved. However, the mobile crane required an even ground to manoeuvre and deploy, which, at that time, would mean taking another few more months to complete.

Incredibly, during the preliminary study, instead of taking over 12 months as estimated earlier, this design took only 6 weeks to complete.

From installation, construction of ramps to finally dismantling, Jenmon’s Gantry Crane proved to be a safer and easier alternative. This was especially so when handling the heavy and long precast. It reduced the risk of accidents during lifting operations, saved cost from equipment rental and ultimately, sped up the construction. In the construction industry, the applications of cranes can vary from project to project. Therefore, it is extremely important to work with the most suitable partner for the best results.
